Alternates Policy

Andover Hockey Association - Alternate Policies for Youth Teams

Beginning in the 2020/2021 season the Andover Hockey Association will offer only limited “alternate” membership for all competitive levels of hockey (i.e. mites through bantams/U14) for skaters in the Coed (Boys and Girls) and Girls (U10, U12 and U14) programs.

I.  Alternate Policies for SKATERS

A.  Coed Teams

As a commitment to our full-time players, AHA will not allow skaters looking to play for a coed team to register as an "alternate" skater.

While exceptions will be considered for extraordinary situations, no player who is registered full time on another team shall be permitted to be registered as an alternate for an AHA coed team without the prior approval of the Board.  Exceptions to be considered are:  not enough players to complete a team; transitional players; a family that moves to Andover mid-season; a custody issue where the player will miss half the games; and recruiting a player back towards the end of a season with a commitment that they will sign up as a full- time player the next season.

B.  Girls Teams

There will be no alternates allowed at the U-10 level, except for extraordinary circumstances as outlined above.

The use and or need for alternate skaters at the U-12/U-14 level will be evaluated annually by the Board of Directors, and AHA is under no obligation to authorize alternates.

C.  Alternate Procedure

Individuals requesting to be alternates on full time teams shall make such request via email to the Placements Committee prior to the beginning of placements.  To the extent they are permitted to be an alternate on a full time team, they will be placed on a team based on their skill and talent level as determined during placements.

To the extent someone is an alternate, they can attend all AHA practices and those games in which they are needed, as determined by their Head Coach.  Alternates are not guaranteed any games and can only be considered for use by a Head Coach when a full-time player is unable to make a game. The total number of players (full time plus alternates) used in a game may not exceed the number of full time players on the roster.

AHA will not authorize alternates for placement on any full-time team unless the roster of full-time skaters in less than 15 players.

The cost of being an Alternate on a full-time team for the 2020/21 season will be  50% of the cost of full-time members.  There will be NO REFUNDS at any time for alternates and PAYMENT WILL BE DUE IN FULL prior to the commencement of the season.

II.  Alternate Policies for GOALIES

Goalies at all levels shall be allowed to register as alternates and will be placed on teams based on their skill and talent level as determined during placements.  As with all alternates, there is no guarantee that goalies will be used during games, and their use is at the discretion of the Head Coach, who shall not be permitted to use an alternate goalie if a full-time goalie is available.
